Tumblr Teachers: Learn from me. Back it up.
Your grades, that is.
I asked fairly recently if Tumblr Teachers who use online gradebooks also keep a hard copy. A lot of you said no. I use an online gradebook and keep a hard copy, even though I’m not required to. BOY did that come in handy today.
It was bound to be a rough day, Tumblr: I guess I forgot to set my alarm. I got up at 5:30 when I am supposed to get up at 4:45. What did I learn? I probably could have gotten a lot of extra sleep this year, because I got ready in time anyway.
During school today, I’m trying to fix up my (online) gradebook since the year is winding down and final grades will be due soon. There’s one assignment that most of my classes did, but one period did not do because of scheduling conflicts. The assignment is still in that period’s gradebook so the assignments for all of my classes stay aligned (this makes operating our grading system easier).
I go to excuse the whole period from the assignment. We have this handy “autofill grade” option where you can fill every students’ input box with the same grade- so I put in EX for excused.
Except instead of choosing Autofill (This one assignment), I accidentally choose Autofill ALL Assignments.

All my grades were gone.
After about 30 seconds of WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY and frantic searching for an “undo” button, I decide to just input all of my grades again- since I keep a hard copy.
I don’t know if there would have been a way for someone to have brought back my previous grades, but I’m guessing it would have been a pain in my butt to find out. Was it a pain in the butt to re-input all of my grades? Yeah, it took about 40 minutes. But I would have been stressing a lot more without my hard copy.
So Tumblr teachers- your gradebook. Back it up.
